Lego Marvel Avengers, is this game for kids? The Brick Rebels' impressions.

Yesterday the fine folks at Warner Brothers Interactive and Traveler's Tales games released the latest in their Lego series, Lego Marvel Avengers.

Those of us here at The Brick Rebels, being Lego fans, picked up a copy (digitally) to get you our initial impressions.

First off thought let me get some details out of the way!

Avengers Assemble! The best-selling LEGO Marvel videogame franchise returns with a brand new action-packed, Super Hero adventure. LEGO Marvel's Avengers features characters and storylines from the critically-acclaimed film Marvel's The Avengers and the smash hit sequel Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as playable content based on additional Marvel Studios blockbusters, including Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Play as Earth's Mightiest Heroes in their quest to save the world.

Features:
  • Experience the Blockbuster Action from the Avengers Films - Relive the most amazing moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the famed Battle of New York between the Avengers and Super Villain Loki as seen in Marvel's The Avengers, experience the epic action from Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron with The Avengers, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Vision and Ultron, journey through familiar Marvel cinematic locations and more, all with a splash of classic LEGO humor!

  • New Character Powers and Abilities - Execute Avengers Team-Ups and Avengers Initiative moves to progress through the story. Players can roam around Open World environments using brand new gameplay mechanics - play as Hulk to super jump off skyscrapers, use Quicksilver to speed run over water or even play as giant characters like Fing Fang Foom who can grow to the size of buildings.
  • Open World & Free Roam Gameplay - Enjoy a unique take on open world gameplay while exploring the expansive streets of LEGO Marvel Manhattan, or discover up to seven other supporting HUB environments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Asgard, Sokovia, South Africa, Barton Farm, Malibu, Washington D.C. and the S.H.I.E.L.D. Base Exterior. Encounter numerous quests, races, puzzles and even random crimes, as well as a myriad of characters and vehicles to choose from to explore on land or in the air.

Brickmaster Robeyone and Padawan Aaron's impressions and score

I have been a huge fan of the Lego games from Traveler's Tales for a while now.  You can check my Gamerscore (Gamertag: Robeyone) and see quite a few 1000/1000 completed Lego titles under my belt.  However I have noticed a trend with these titles and Lego Marvel Avengers appears to suffer the same issue.  These games are getting complicated, and it makes it hard to play with your kids.

Traveler's Tale Lego games have always touted the awesome couch co-op fun that kids and adults can share while playing in these awesome Lego Universe versions of our favorite movie/comic book franchises.  I was excited to sit down with Padawan AJ and experience this together with him for the first time.

It started out great, Aaron was playing Hawkeye while I was tearing it up with Black Widow.  We were having fun, but at too many points did I have to ask for the controller from my son and do the little scripted event that was necessary for us to progress in the level.  In fact there was a section in the first level where it was Captain America (Aaron) and Thor (me) where I didn't even know what we were supposed to do, and had to spend a good ten minutes trying to figure it out.  It's all fun and games until you have a frustrated six year old boy.

That being said, the production value for these games only continues to increase, and Lego Marvel Avengers is no exception.  Using excerpts of voices from the movie, all of the Lego characters are fully voiced with their corresponding actor.  There are a few points where a different voice actor is used to when the dialog from the movie wouldn't suffice, but it was limited.  Having this fully voiced in addition to the charm these Lego  characters give off is a nice touch.

Lego Marvel Avengers is massive, with collectibles and gameplay that could last in the 50 to 60 hour range.  There is so much to collect in this game, and doing so has always been addicting.  From Characters (in this version there are a ton!), mini-kits, gold bricks, and the always charming Stan Lee, there is always something to go back and replay in the levels included in Lego Marvel Avengers.

Lego Marvel Avengers is a great addition to the already copious number of Travelers Tale's Lego games.  It is a nice polished package with a lot of variable gameplay and some cool, cute little gimmicks. Co-op and difficulty aside, Aaron is ready to play again, and so am I.  So we can give this a solid Lego Rebel's recommendation.  However, given the difficult curve, we gotta rate this as just Great! (four out of five) on our five point scale.

Meet the Brick Rebels Staff!

So I know sometimes we think these little blogs and channels are really one man bands.  Not that case for the team here at Lego Rebels.  This is a multi-person effort, and I am excited to introduce us to you!

Brick Master Robeyone

Legos have always had a very special place in my heart.  My love affair for the little brick has been around since I got my first Lego set, 6890 Cosmic Cruiser, in 1982.  Since then I have played in the world of Castle, City, Technic, Futron, Blacktron, Robin Hood and Pirate throughout my childhood.  Now, even as an adult, I still collect sets. Just ask my wife, secretly I think she wishes I didn't!.

My passion for Lego was reignited when Lego and Star Wars got together and made the penultimate love child with the Ultimate Collectors Edition sets.  Now I want to share this passion for Lego with you, our readers/viewers, and my children (who are on the staff too!).  This blog and YouTube channel are my way of interacting with the amazing and creative community that is Lego.

Brick Master Gaiden

Legos have always been one of the best ‘imagination’ toys for me. I played with Legos throughout my childhood, and admit that I continued to play with them into High School. Lego Fire Fighter set 775 was my first and only Lego predefined set, and I still found ways to turn it into a space ship, monstrous boat, and other wacky ideas that peaked my imagination. Throughout all of my experimentation, I always strived for functionality with my Lego creations, and longed for implementations greater than static objects.

Now I am getting back into Legos, and the Technic line tugs at my functional goals with the creations I build. I will build anything that I find interesting, as I want to understand how it goes together and leverage ideas for my own future creations. Technic products tend to be at the top of that list, and building working vehicles utilizing gear ratios, power engines, pneumatics, and IR remote controls, certainly start my imagination wheels turning with ideas on what I could build beyond the defined sets.

Brick Padawan Madeline

Hi! My name is Madeline, and I am 8 years old.  I heard about Lego's when I was younger so I wanted to try a set out.  When I built my first set I really liked it and have been hooked every sense.  My favorite Legos are the Lego Friends series. I love the show and the show tells me about what sets you can build.  When I am not building Lego's I am doing martial arts, gymnastics, reading and spending time with my family.

Brick Padawan Maxwell

Hi! My name is Maxwell and I am 9 years old. I have been building Legos since I was 4. I think Legos are just awesome and my favorite Lego set right now is Wall-E. I like the idea of Lego dimensions and the big variety of Legos available to build. When I am not building Lego's I am hanging out playing Minecraft, chillin' with my family, or playing outside.

Brick Padawan Aaron

Hello I am the littlest Padawan Aaron. I like Legos because you can build anything you want out of them.  My favorite Lego sets are the trains and the airplanes.  I love the Lego trains because I love trains and the Lego trains look cool.  When I am not building Lego's I am doing martial arts, playing Anki Overdrive, playing with my sister and hanging out with my family.

Lego TECHNIC 8043 Motorized Excavator - Initial Impressions

After a long weekend of building Lego's (hard life right!) we wanted to take a moment and let Brickmaster Gaiden give some initial impressions on the set he tackled this weekend.  It was Lego Technic 8043 Motorized Excavator, a retired and now expensive set from the Lego world of Technic.

Here is the description and highlights from Lego:

Build it and dig in!
No dirty job is too big for this heavy-duty Motorized Excavator! Just flip a switch on the LEGO® Power Functions dual infrared remote control to drive the excavator to job sites, spin the cabin 360 degrees, to maneuver the articulated arm and to dig with the shovel.

Features:
• LEGO Power Functions include two infrared remote control handsets, 4 motors, 2 receivers, 4 linear actuators and a battery box.
• Four motorized functions: Move! Dig! Spin! Lift!
• Deep scoop bucket comes equipped with strong digging claws!
• 2 in 1 model rebuilds into Tracked Loader
• Excavator measures over 18" (45 cm) long

The set has 1127 pieces and recommended for ages 12 to 16.  Unfortunately this is now a retired set and picking this up will actually put you back a fair amount of cash.  Right now you can purchase this on Amazon for a little below $600.00.  Lucky for you, Lego Rebels built the whole thing this weekend and you can watch the build in first person without having to drop a dime!  Check out the video below.

Brickmaster Gaiden had a great time with this build, in fact it was his favorite Technic build so far.  Here is his full initial impression:

"The Lego 8043 build is currently my favorite build to date. I have built three Technic sets so far, and this build resulted in something that fulfills my dreams in having a fully functional Lego creation.

The set utilizes 4 motors and allows for separate track control, rotation of the frame, finite boom control, and the ability to use the scoop accurately. The standard toggles between gear sets can be toggled via the IR Remote, allowing for a fully remote experience with the Excavator / Loader (depending on the build variant).

I was surprised that the set was based on books vs. bags. This meant that there was not a fully clear stopping point when you wanted to take a break, and while the book method did have relatively clean breaks, the bag method for Technic tends to be a bit more intuitive.

Additionally, there is one step in Book One that has you push one of the main drive axles all the way through, and this step comes long after the axle is in place. The step is not as obvious as it could be, and resulted in me going backwards to try and understand where I made a mistake, until I spotted the step. Overall, the result is the most fun building and greatest pride in the creation of the builds I have done to date. Previous Technic builds – 42042 and 42043."

So what do you think of the set?  Would you pay $600.00?  Let us know in the comments!

Our first videos are live! Yes, it was painful...

We have been hard at work this weekend starting to populate the YouTube channel with videos of Lego builds.  It has been quite the process having to work through all of the difference facets of making these videos.  Honestly, it was more work than we had anticipated.

I flew from London on Friday afternoon, arriving in Seattle at around 3:00pm.  I spoke with my family, unpacked, and hung out with my kids until around 7:00pm that night.  Then it was time to get to work.  It started with unpacking the large pile of boxes that had arrived while I was traveling abroad.  The boxes contained things like Legos, photography lights, table cloths, GoPros, tripods and a myriad of other items needed to help make these shoots successful.  This whole process of unpacking took about two hours.

Setup was next on the list.  I wrestled with the light soft boxes, got the table cloth and muslin cloths ironed, setup the stands for the lights, prepped the GoPros and RX10 for filming and finally walked through mentally the order in which the video was going to go.  I was just about to start building when I decided to do a time check, it was a little after 10:00pm.

Three hours later, I am finally building Legos.  I began filming the opening of the 97 piece star destroyer. I built the set while the GoPro recorded the time lapse. Finally I recorded all the scenes to finish the production.  Happy birthday to me - it's now after midnight, January 17th and it is officially my birthday.

As a present to myself I now have to edit this video and this is where the pain begins. Editing started by opening up my Razer Blade laptop and booting up Adobe Premier, which doesn't load. I fiddle with this, for who knows how long, and finally go up stairs to work on my desktop machine.  Unfortunately that machine is in my bedroom, and as quiet as I think I am being, I wake up my wife. Luckily, I have a forgotten Alienware laptop stored away, that I grab and prep to use to edit.  Twenty windows updates and some software downloads later it finally works.

At 6:30am on January 17th the first video went live on YouTube, almost twelve hours later.

So yeah, it was hard, but we think it was worth it!  So without further delay, here are the first two videos from Lego Rebels!

Lego Star Wars 75033 Microfighters Series One Star Destroyer

Lego Star Wars 75099 Rey's Speeder

So enjoy! Leave feedback, tell us what we can do better.  Just know that we are working hard, to bring you good Lego content :)

Now, which build should I build second?

Welcome to The Brick Rebels
This weekend is an important weekend. The staff here at The Brick Rebels is embarking on a new adventure to help share our love of Legos with you!

Guess what, it was no small task.
When Kevin and I discussed starting this endeavor (actually, I think I simply told Kevin I was going to do this, and he was going to be a part of it), neither of us really knew what it would entail. Fast forward two GoPros, a light studio, a photography turntable, and muslin (yes - it's a thing), and we are approaching what was to be our reality.

However, before we go to far, I wanted to say thank you to a few people.
  • Shaun LaBrie - intro video, avatars, and logo design.
  • Jay Windland - input on video recording setups, equipment, and know-how.
  • Mrs. Robey - for letting me scatter Legos and equipment all over our house.

With that behind us, now comes the hard part. Which amazing Lego set am I building first?

Let me introduce to you... Lego Set 75033!

Lego Set 75033 and it's 97 pieces will be the debut Lego set for Brick Rebels. What is more fitting than an Epic Star Destroyer in 97 pieces!

Sure, it's not Lego Set 75827 (Don't worry, we have it and it's coming!). I know it's not that grandest start. It is, however, a small set which is quick to build allowing us to ensure that everything is going to work quickly. I mean, how painful would that be to do a big build and find out afterwards the video is going to end up terrible.

Okay, with that explained we can move to the main point of business. What Lego set should I build second?  It's important because this Lego set will be the first real set for the channel. So why not include you guys in the decision?  Nice of us don't you think.

So with no further delay the candidates are, in no particular order:

First Order Special Forces Tie Fighter set 75101

                                         Poe's X-Wing Fighter, set 75102

Kylo Ren's Command Shuttle set 75104

                                           Ghostbusters Ecto-1 set 21108

Let your voice be heard!
How, you ask?  Tell me in the comments below. Who knows your comment might be the one that determines the set I build.  But do it quick, I start building and filming on Saturday!  Don't worry, we will do them all, so even if yours isn't first it will be up on the site in haste.
